PA reject list of prisoners to be released, saying there was no Palestinian participation in picking the names

Ramallah. Ma'an. 17/07/07. Undersecretary for the Ministry of Prisoners Affairs, Ziad Abu Ain, has claimed that the Palestinian Authority have rejected the list of prisoners to be released put forward by Israel, despite the Israeli government's apparent determination to go forward with their list. "In time, we will welcome the release of any prisoner but this list is a unilateral list and is not serving the Palestinian national interest. It is not serving the criteria of the Palestinians which says that the oldest prisoners should be released; there are 64 prisoners in Israeli jails who have been there over 20 years and there is one --Said Al Ataba--who who has been in jail for 31 years."

Abu Ain said that the refusal was made in the meeting between Abbas and Olmert on Monday, adding that the PA is rejecting the list "because the Israeli side chose the names without Palestinian participation". Intended as a gesture of support to the Abbas government, the Israeli cabinet approved the list of 256 prisoners today.

Abu Ain asserted that the Israeli list includes only prisoners who have been in jail for about one year, and at most eight years.
